We love the most those who we work the hardest for. Not that we work the hardest for those we love the most, but the opposite. Those who are easy with us, who ask less of us, who need less and who do more, might deserve to mean more but actually mean less than those who require the best of us, test our limits, and demonstrate to us how much we have to give. In loving someone who doesn't love as well, often doesn't know how to give in return and yet always knows how to take, maybe doesn't deserve it, we learn that our love is abundant. We become our best selves. We love ourselves and them more for the effort and the intention we exhibit. While love is abundant, our time, our effort, our attention and other resources are finite. Eventually the bill comes due, time runs out, other things come up, we are exhausted and wonder why we overextended ourselves.
Matured love then maybe is just simply learning to love things that aren’t demanding anything of you but your presence and your ability to hold yourself well.
